• This is me!

  • A blog about moving abroad

I'm Jenny and this is where I blog in English. The texts will most likely cover many different subjects, but most of all, this is a blog about a familly moving from Sweden to Germany, from Stockholm to Hamburg.

Breakfast bliss and communicative barriers

It has become a bit of a habit, after dropping kids off at various schools and Kindergartens, to head for a bit of me-time at Due Baristi. It’s usually quite peaceful there, especially in the mornings. People do what I do, sit there to read the paper, read a book, get some work done… Enjoy the silence – and a stiff Cappuccino Grande. Today I went there most of all because for once I had a camera with me – and could pixelate my morning bliss for you folks.

If ever in Hamburg, don’t miss Due Baristi – OK?

Other excitement today: I had one of those nightmare-ish moments when my German skills just aren’t enough, even for the most basic needs of communication, and mere shame has my brain simply pack up and call it a day. So from a brave attempt to communicate with Kindergarten-staff, to total brain melt-down – about 35 seconds. Go me!

Not only do I look forward to my German class this fall. I desperately need it…!

  1. Trust me, by then you will have picked up a lot on your own as well.

Mark my words – pixelated mornings are the best.

Speaking of Cappuccino Grande, are coffee prices grande down there too?

    • Hm – pretty “grande” I’d say. 3.20 for the coffee and 2.20 for the water… Like Sweden though – not more expensive. And considering they charge as much in less qualitative places, I’d rather pay 3.20 at Due Baristi than at “Hansabäckerei” where I went today, and had a bowl of slightly coffee-flavoured dishwater… :P

  2. So long dishwater – hello-o-o thermo mug? ;)

    • Today it was a social investment, not really about the coffee. The other mothers were going for fika after drop-off so I tagged along for the chat. Dishwater was the back-side of it… ;-)

  3. …and a wise move it was.

There comes a time in one’s life for thermo mugs. (Incidentally I just gave mine to Dad but that’s another story.)

    • But – have you managed to find one that actually works…? Mine gets cold just as fast – I only use it for having coffee by the computer, because it has a lid…!

  4. Whenever I used mine it was for cold water. And then someone invented tap water. (Or at least I discovered it!)

  5. Speaking of Cappuccino. I could have sworn I’ve seen this one elsewhere… :)

  6. So, would this be the place for conjuring up immortal novels…?
